Cloud Storage Price War

The latest skirmish in the price war for cloud storage among the largest service providers was undertaken by Microsoft, as
Windows Azure announced a price cut ‘by as much as 28%’
.

Price drops from the other largest service providers, including Google and Amazon, have created a battle for greatest value for cloud storage.

Azure have also invested in their storage infrastructure, adding to their geo-redundant storage, where replicas are physically separated, to further protect data from the effects of natural disasters.

Whilst Amazon is still the leader in this space, increased competition, with price drops whilst increasing the features and service is good news for consumers.

Guarav Mantri (a Microsoft MVP) has created a calculator to help users determine whether Amazon or Microsoft is cheaper, explaining the three factors that affects price – transaction cost, storage cost and bandwidth cost.
